Are Elections in USA cursed by Halloween?
Cynical drinking holiday just prior to election distracts college kids from voting.
Sports fans watch games drink beer and it's over. In college towns all the kids (sports fans or not) plan Halloween parties for two weeks in advance, spend forever decorating and working on costumes and planning MEGA parties and costume contests and spend two days afterwards just recovering from the whole thing. It is the biggest party of the year! Halloween is FAR more popular in the US today than in all the European countries where the voting turnout is much higher. I guarantee you could get a significantly higher college turnout at the polls and volunteering if the vote was the 1st Tuesday in October.
