I have a feeling the answer to this question is yes!
Everyone knows the protocol of pure bi-partisanship that is universally followed at an event like today's dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas Texas. No one, certainly not a sitting president, would even consider using the moment to make politically motivated barbs at the expense of the ex-president being honored.
So, when President Obama said (in relation to the potential passage of progressive immigration reform) "And if we do that, it will be in large
part thanks to the hard work of President George W. Bush. " you can bet your hat that Mr. Obama not only 'thought' that Mr. Bush would not be offended by his mention of a current and controversial piece of legislation on this special day, but also that this part of his speech had been formally vetted by his predecessor.
President Bush's smile and the applause of the audience after President Obama's rallying cry for passage of the immigration reform bill represented as good of an endorsement as the ex-president could possibly offer.
As to whether Mr. Bush will formally endorse the legislation when it is brought to the floor of congress I can't be sure, but as Rush Limbaugh said on his show today 'Listen folks, the big-wigs in the Republican party want this and they don't care what real conservatives like us think.' He went on to say that only the Tea Partiers in the House of Representatives can stop this bill from becoming law.
I'm starting to have a sneaking suspicion that the far-right's threats of primarying any Republican who votes for immigration reform, may be met with a reciprocal promise from the Republican 'big-wigs' Limbaugh refers to, perhaps with the support of President George W. Bush himself.
