Epitaph for Rock?

In the beginning (Chuck Berry ex) "Rock" was dance music and it was successful commercially as a musical genre, with many bands and artists sharing in the profits.

In its second phase (Led Zeppelin ex) Rock became introspective and less rhythm and beat oriented and was still commercially successful, but with far fewer bands and artists sharing in the profits.

In the third phase (Punk, New Wave ex) Rock went back to its dance roots and was still commercially successful and for many more bands and artists than it had been in the 2nd phase.

Today, "Rock" is no longer dance music and commercially speaking, Rock has been usurped by Country and Hip Hop and is no longer commercially viable for many bands and artists.

The music of Rock's past is vastly more commercially successful than Rock is today. Ironically, big Hip Hop stars refer to themselves as Rock Stars!

RIP Rock?
