And the World Turns to War Again

I hope I'm wrong, I know I'm afraid.

Through trade with evil leaders we have strengthened them and with our immoral occupation of Iraq we justified the same behavior for others.

There is a popular theory that peaceful democratic nations can spread democracy and peace through trade with totalitarian nations and monarchy's. These 'trade optimists' who believe in this idea are comforted by the fact that Russia 'depends' on Western Europe for revenue from selling its natural gas. And too they feel safer because China 'depends' on revenue from the mass quantities of goods they sell the USA and other western nations. Likewise, our ally Israel is supposedly kept safer because democratic nations buy oil from cruel monarchs in the Middle East.

But who is dependent on who here? And once a nation is rich and strong how can the world expect that nation not to treat its neighbors and the global community the same way it treats its own people. Undemocratic pseudo slave states, given the power, will enslave others. As Russia and China have maintained and increased the size of their military's the world has taken false comfort in free trade as a buffer against war. China continues to support North Korea despite their constant pounding of war drums concerning South Korea and we continue to depend on China as our manufacturing base despite their aggressive military maneuvers. And hear how quiet they are about today's news...

The sad results could be the following chain of events...(I pray I'm wrong).
Russia invades Ukraine
North Korea invades South Korea
China takes Hong Kong and declares that Hawaii is theirs.
In the ensuing chaos Israel strikes Iran starting war throughout the Middle East.
Finally, global nuclear war.

I always wondered why Russia and China were so quiet about our invasion of Iraq. Now I know why, they saw it as a permission slip for invasions of their own. The world (through trade) has been feeding some very mean dogs and now they are tired of waiting to be fed.

  1. Hong Kong already belongs to China. It reverted back to Chinese rule after the British treaty expired.

Everything else has nothing to do with trade and everything to do with the age old quest for power. The Russian October Revolution in 1917 which put Lenin in power had nothing to do with trade. The rise of communist China had nothing to do with trade. Cuba, Venezuela, countless satellite communist states had nothing to do with trade. It's always been a quest for power.

Putin could care less about trade. Russia can be entirely self sufficient, as can the US if only the psychotic democrats would let us use our own resources.

Putin understands Obama and other western nations are weak ... morally, economically and financially. Obama has shown Putin through his words and actions that he is not willing to stand up for freedom and that his political ambitions drive his decisions, not the well being of the US or other free nations. Putin will do whatever he wants because he can and he knows there is no one to stop him.

    1. The point is that if not for trade Russia and China would not be strong enough to pose a threat...Russia and China can't grow enough feed themselves. And Hong Kong is not a police state as is China-
Wikipedia-On 1 July 1997, Hong Kong became the first Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, under the principle of "one country, two systems" (the other, Macau, attained that status in December 1999). It has a different political system from mainland China.[21] Hong Kong's independent judiciary functions under the common law framework.[22][23] Hong Kong Basic Law, its constitutional document, which stipulates that Hong Kong shall have a "high degree of autonomy" in all matters except foreign relations and military defence, governs its political system.[2

    2. The Soviet Union wasn't considered a threat? NATO was formed to counter the USSR. A nuclear communist China wasn't considered a threat?

I understand the point you're trying to make but trade is simply secondary to the whims of people who want power and dominance.
