I live in the same broadcast market as Greenville SC. I heard all the ads before this primary and despite the hateful bigotry of Newt's victory speech tonight, that isn't what won him this primary...He won because of his relentless attacks on Romney's record at Bain which ran nonstop on AM rightwing radio, Limbaugh etc. And that was clearly the main attack line on Romney chosen by Santorum, Perry and Gingrich in the debates leading up to this primary. Why does all the media focus on the hate against President Obama and not the Taxes and 'good versus bad capitalism' that has come to the forefront in the debates and ads? Is it because even Liberal broadcasters on MSNBC and CNN are still mouthpieces for their corporate masters? YES!
The Message of SC Primary is POPULISM WORKS WITH REDNECKS. That's what won it for Newt not Race or Choice. This is the GREAT NEWS FOR DEM'S!
This moves the Rs far towards our chosen field of play...
ECONOMICS TAXES AND FAIRNESS
We're gonna win bigtime!
And the Left and Right corporate mavens will not silence us!

Dixie Dove, you are correct!!
ReplyDeleteActually, what is happening within the GOP right now is a fight between the GOP elites and the working class/social conservative block.
Romney's past business dealings with Bain are the main cause.
For the past 30 years, the GOP has successfully convinced this demographic in the South and Midwest to vote against their own economic self-interests by stressing "family values." And unfortunately, they got help from the Democratic Party during the '90s (thanks to NAFTA).
But with Romney's business practices under scrutiny, it's very difficult for this demographic to shield themselves with "family values."
This is a big win for the Dems because as much as Newt has exposed with Romney, his hands are also dirty. He's was on the con-game himself. It's going to be difficult for him to keep this up.
You're right too!
ReplyDeleteOne small caveat...The one thing that was way worse than Clinton signing NAFTA was his signing GATT. That sent our manufacturing base, not south of the border, but to the other side of the planet! I wish that all our vacated jobs were on our continent at least!
I was a volunteer for Tom Harkin in the 92 primary vs Clinton in New Hampshire...I'll never forget sitting in a bar as they debated across the street at WMUR NH. Harkin said "I'll never sell our manufacturing base to a nation who treats their workers like slaves, no rights no voice" and he referenced Tianemen Square...Clinton replied "I'm with you Tom, that should never happen"....BC has done some mea culpa-ing on that, but still...

We should have also been exposing that the Republicans only give lip service to "family values" but don't really hold them.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are right that this economics stuff is going to get more Dems into Congress and reelect Obama. With majorities in both houses, Obama will do much more, less indirectly. And the Supreme Court replacements likely to come up in the next four years are critical if we don't want more Citizens United type decisions. The Republicans want to destroy Medicare and Social Security, but why doesn't the populace know that? Media is hiding it from anyone they can hide it from.
I hope that the liberal seeming broadcasters who don't focus on our tax history and the logical solution to many of our problems (raise taxes on the rich)...I hope they're really just not 'up to speed' and distracted by the 24-7 cycle. I hate to think they're doing it on orders from above.
DeleteWas that tongue in cheek?
ReplyDeleteThat's funny...No I really do have hope that we can get the mssg through and that it's not a 'Wall of China' situation...I got to talk to Thomas Frank (http://www.tcfrank.com/) on a call-in show the other day. His new book Pity the Billionaire looks good...on this topic.
