The first thing you learn in any public speaking class is to HAVE A GLASS OF WATER HANDY! Handy means on a side table so that you don't have to change posture to reach it. Then you wait for a break in your speech and calmly take a sip. You might even say 'pardon me' and resume.
What is it about Republican presidential hopefuls embarrassing themselves? This looked even more silly than Rick Perry's #3 routine. The unintended joke was made even funnier by the fact that Rubio was doing a very good job with his speech up until the moment he reached for the water, so he did a perfect 'straight man' set up to his comic buffoonery.
How could he go on camera on national television without making water arrangements first. Sadly it raises the question, 'if you can't handle that...?' The water was out of reach, there was no one to hand it to him, he didn't pardon himself, he just lunged off camera inexplicably while staring back at the audience like a scared kid watching the cashier while tried to steal some condoms from behind the counter.From Golden Boy to Water Boy in one swift lunge. Just wait until he votes with the Democrats on immigration!
Someone must have told him to maintain eye contact? Steven Colbert demonstrated excellent technique on just how to do this, no matter what! I do disagree with you on Rubio's overall speechifying post SOTU though. His water-lurch just clinched my sense that he clearly belongs at the kid's table!
