I guess you have to say it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.
Violent conflict is the ultimate thing to be avoided, the last thing to be allowed and should never be 'pursued' under any circumstances.
President Obama got elected largely on winding down the Iraq war and he has done that. I think he's a pacifist at heart. Afghanistan is a tragic situation where we have accomplished most of our goals and we did have valid interests in this heart of Al Qaeda, but now, while we want to leave we can't totally leave behind those who formed the Afghan government and who truly did give us the most real support of any country in our hunt for Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden. The good people of Afghanistan cannot be blamed for the criminals who hid there, but the good people of Afghanistan have paid the highest price of all for our progress.
In the many other smaller military missions president Obama has faced he has consistently leaned towards the morally virtuous position and used the most moderate military force possible. And in this sad department the president has faced a banquet of opportunities to exercise military force if he or she saw fit.
There is such a situation in our sad messy violent world where it is morally worse to stand by and use no force to affect the outcome of a conflict than it is to use force in return. It is the most gruesome decision a human being must be asked to make. It is a dirty job, but someone really does have to do it.
