For those saying that President Obama is anti-Israel, you must be unaware that very soon the United Nations plans to vote on recognizing Palestine as a state (pre-1967 borders). The US and Israel will be the only two countries on earth (with a real military force) to vote against that. In his speach President condemned this vote by the UN and said it is meaningless until the Palestinians recognize Israel.
President George W Bush and President Obama both said IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that the pre-1967 boundaries HAD TO BE THE STARTING POINT for future negotions. And President Obama clearly said in his speech that given that starting point there ...would have to be mutually agreed to ADJUSTMENTS in those original border lines to give consideration to population shifts since 1967, ie the settlements. That's exactly what the man said. And the quote from W on Hardball was a VIDEO CLIP not a paraphrase from the host (Smerconish filled in for CM).
FROM THE AP:"Behind the rhetoric, though, was the possibility of finding common ground. Obama said he would support agreed-upon territorial swaps between the Israel and the Palestinians, leaving the door open for Israel to retain major West Bank settlements, where the vast majority of its nearly 300,000 Jewish settlers live."

Do you think Hamas (& etc.) will ever recognize Israel's right to exist?
ReplyDeleteI think that if Israel would openly accept the 1967 borders (with mutually agreed land swaps to account for population shifts) then I think that yes, the Palestinian leadership would recognize Israel. We have to remember, that by not accepting the legal 1967 boundaries, Israel too is not recognizing the right for Palestine to exist.
