GOD SAVE THE FCC
For years I have been ridiculed or ignored by my fellow liberals and the FCC as I desperately tried to warn people that our society must address the dishonest hate-speech and bigoted propaganda that has been spewing unabated from AM stations across the nation on our public airwaves.
I have tried to point out that Limbaugh and Hannity and their ilk have been abusing our free speech laws to demonize their political opponents, literally speaking. Time after time I have been told by liberals in the press to 'just ignore them, turn the channel'. But I couldn't turn away from this hateful spectacle because I knew that there were millions of Americans who were also listening to these shows and were coming to the conclusion that the dishonest revisionist history being taught by these talk-radio hosts 'must be true, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to say it on the radio'.
I have filed many FCC complaints to no avail. I am not asking the FCC to control what these people say, I am simply asking for the FCC to make some room for opposing views on our public airwaves because it is only when opposing views are heard on the air on the same radio stations these hate-talkers monopolize that their followers will hear them and be forced to consider the question 'maybe they're right, otherwise they couldn't say it on the radio...could they?'
The FCC must open up space for countering views. It is a monopoly. I know from personal experience that these AM hate-talk stations in the South and rural areas all over the country WILL NOT SELL TIME AT ANY PRICE TO LIBERAL GROUPS.
That's their favorite argument...that the market rules, and truth will out...but why would a conservative radio station owner put a liberal show on the air, even if the liberal show generates a greater profit, if in fact, the liberal show is argueing to INCREASE TAXES ON THE STATION OWNER...?
Therein lies the rub.

You are a jackass. The libs can lie all they want but that is ok, right? Only people that agree with you are right. Air america tried to combat the evil right and failed. They failed because the rest of us know bull shit when we hear it. And you are full of it. People are born dumb, but being stupid is a choice. I see which choice you made.

Chip -- I don't disagree with your analysis, but I don't think the tax thing is the only reason they won't accept even successful liberal talk shows. I think it is also that they are afraid of the influence of liberal talk shows in general: after all, they do know and acknowledge that reality has a strong liberal bias. People with a difficult to believe philosophy hate to have any contradicting ideas out there -- they fear the competition.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous -- If each side says the other side lies, how do you, personally, decide which one tells the truth and which one is doing the lying? I am under the impression that the Right Wing talk shows lie much much much more than the Left does. We often hear recordings of people saying things they claim not to have said, etc., as evidence that the Right lies. do you get much evidence on your side? Beyond that, if you study sociology, you will see that in the lists of "family values" of the left and the right, the left values truth and honesty much more highly than the right does, while the right values loyalty and obedience much more highly than the left does. So it is reasonable to assume that the right is appealing to your loyalty to convince you that they are the ones telling the truth rather than to your ability to actually discern the truth.

ReplyDelete-I think what Chip is saying, is that both of them should be required to present the opposing viewpoint. And he is entirely correct concerning current attempts by these commentators at revisionist history.
I was against the fairness doctrine, back when they eliminated it, because I felt it interfered with the 1st amendment...now that I've seen how bad it can get, with the saturation of propaganda and even outright lies, I understand why the FCC did not allow unbridled and uncontested opinion to rule the people's airwaves.
Chip is right. Bring back the fairness doctrine. It will not "silence" anyone, it will simply insure that some form of alternate opinion will be presented also, and will short circuit the revisionist history that is currently being disseminated (and is ultimately a failure of our public schools).
There is plenty of nutty xhit on the left and I could use some help fixing that myself...but right now this BALKANIZATION of radio is leading to I N S A N I T Y and it will lead to more violence...
ReplyDeleteBecause what is happening is WITH OUR FREE SPEECH VALUES...and with NO COUNTER BALANCE ON ANY STATION-LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE...what ends up happening is that Liberal and Conservative hosts tell THE BIGGEST AND MOST HATEFUL LIES ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE AS THEY POSSIBLY CAN! And both sides do it to PLEASE THEIR REGULAR LISTENERS...FOR RATINGS...
SINCE LYING IS ALLOWED...IF WE DON'T ALSO MAKE STATIONS ALLOW COUNTERING VIEWS THEN THE TRUTH HAS NO CHANCE AND WE ARE DESTINED TO KILL EACH OTHER!!!!!
