Georgia State Gas Tax and Income Tax Refund!

My fellow Georgians (USA).
...We're in dire straits with our budget and we need to take some strong medicine ASAP.
...With the plan I detail here we can turn some of our problems into assets, monetary assets.
...Georgia is the gateway to Florida for the whole country and the gateway to the whole country for Floridians. We are the elbow for most east-west traffic in the country. I bet we're the highest traffic-through-state in the nation.
...For too long we have been a doormat as out of state travelers and material transporters pound our infrastructure and crowd our roads. We need to turn this problem into a solution.
...I propose that Georgia implement a state-wide 10 cent per gallon tax on gasoline and diesel fuel. Simultaneously, we should lower or eliminate our state income tax to offset the burden to Georgia residents.
...The ten cent per gallon net revenue from out of state through-traffic should be enough to largely solve our budget shortfall.
...We deserve this contribution from the out of state patrons who frequent our transportation system.
...Please forward this link to your state representative and to the governor.
Thanks,
Chip Shirley

  2. Now here is a creative revenue enhancer that makes a lot of sense. To bad we have this 'no tax' at all crowd decrying everything tax related.

  3. Thanks faithson,

    I appreciate that.

There is a new 'Tax Study Panel' that I think was appointed by Gov. Perdue (there is an excerpt from a story about it below and the link). These panels are often created by leadership to give them some bipartisan 'expert' advice to allow for the political cover they need to consider 'revenue enhancemant'...

"At least part of the gap could be made up with higher taxes or by eliminating some tax loopholes lawmakers have approved over the years. A new state council began work reviewing the tax code just last week.

That panel will spend the next five months considering a host of issues, including whether the state should charge sales taxes on more goods and services and raise less from income taxes, and which tax breaks create jobs and which don’t. "
